Ministry Through Offerings - SBC provides funding for national and world missions through the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Baptist Alliance and the Southern Baptist Convention. |
A hallmark of Baptists living out our Christian faith is the commitment to Missions. Stemming from Jesus’ mandates to “Go unto all the world with the gospel,” and to “love your neighbor as yourself,” Baptists have historically been at the forefront of efforts to relieve suffering and to improve living conditions through direct assistance and through educational efforts. Everyone who gives to special mission offerings or participates through the cooperative mission efforts supports finically these mission causes. Over the last five years, 2003-2007, Southside members contributed over $800,000 to these causes through their church. However, that is not the only way that Southside members contribute to mission causes. Recognizing that this beautiful building is a tremendous resource for missions and ministry in this community and beyond, Southside members answered the mission call and opened the doors to a variety of nonprofit organizations.
Currently, three congregations, in addition to Southside, hold religious services weekly. Nine other non-profits have offices in the building, from which they administer a variety of ministries and programs that are in keeping with Southside’s philosophy of missions and ministry. Some of the organizations focus on local needs and offer direct emergency assistance, while others provide counseling and/or educational services. One organization is internationally focused and makes at least two trips a year to Liberia, where they have recently completed construction on a school.
Southside members have a hand in these mission and ministry efforts. Even though these organizations contribute collectively to Southside approximately $50,000 annually to defray some of the building overhead, this amount is only about a third of the value of the space and services received by these organizations. Therefore, Southside contributes as “in kind” contribution over $100,000 annually to help facilitate these ministries. While many wonderful mission and ministry efforts are process, there is still much to do. Hopefully, over time we will be able to increase our giving to missions through dollars to direct mission causes, and at the same time become even better stewards of the many wonderful resources with which we have been entrusted. Below is a list of the churches and non-profits that have offices and/or have weekly meetings here.
